Did
you know that by law, every
person in Kenya is entitled
to a clean and healthy environment and has a duty
to safe-guard and enhance the environment?
Did
you know that the Environmental Management
and Coordination Act passed in 1999 and brought into
force in 2000 offers members of local communities
the opportunity to be actively
involved in the management of their environment?
Did
you know that by that
Act, you and I have the right to bring legal action
against people or organisations that are polluting
or degrading the environment, without having to show
that our rights and interests have been directly violated
or are likely to be violated?
Did
you Know that even before
taking legal action, you can report alleged cases
of pollution and environmental degradation to the
Public Complaints Committee?
The user friendly
Community Guide to Environmental
Issues and to the Environmental Management and Co-ordination
Act, 1999 prepared by Environmental Law Project,
Environment Liaison Centre International (ELCI), with
financial support from the Royal Netherlands Embassy
contains this and more useful information for the
environmentally conscientious ordinary Kenyan.

Chief Alice addressing
members during this year's AGM
Karen Chief Alice Adhola

Langata Chief Josephine

Issues of noise disturbance have
been received at the KLDA offices from members both
from the Hardy and Karen Shopping Centres.
The Hardy case was reported to the
Public Complaints Committee by KLDA and a sitting
of the Committee was held on 23rd March 2005, with
KLDA in attendance and members from the the neighbourhood
Mr Tilley, Mr. Alleyne, Mr. Farrell, Ms. Christy,
and Mr. Schalch. The PCC advise members on what
action to take. The owners of the Southern Comfort
bar who were the defendants did not attend despite
being served with the notice and rudely declining
to accept the same.
Chief Alice has been on the forefront
in stopping this menace. It has now come to
our attention that the Provincial Commissioner Mr.
Sigei has given Chief Alice the mandate to deal with
the owners of the local bar at Hardy which has been
the source of the noise.
More details on this issue will be
provided as and when received.

.
What does a resident in this area do with the mountains
of glass bottles, jars and/or broken glass panes taking
up valuable storage space in the shed out back?
Is there any method of disposal that does not include
expensive private disposal service contracts, or long
drives to remote glass factories out in the middle
of nowhere?
The KLDA BOTTLE BANK
- helps free up that space and ease socio-environmental
consciousness.
Central Glass Industries
provided the means, Langata Link generously provided
the space, Kentainers provided suitable receptacles
and KLDA conceived, coordinated and implemented the
plan.
Dispose your glass
at the KLDA Bottle Bank conveniently located within
the Langata Link Complex.

The Public Complaints Committee on Environment was
established under the Environmental Act 2000, to address
allegations or complaints against any person(s) or
organisation(s) in relation to environmental degradation
and......IT WORKS!!
Appropriate and effective action to take in dealing
with environmental issues:-
First important step is to attempt to reason/reach
a compromise with the offenders, either directly,
or via the Police or Chief.
Second,
seek support from immediate/affected neighbours verifying
the claim. (Signed petition).
Finally,
outline the complaint in a letter and address it to
The Chairman, Public Complaints Committee on Environment,
copy to KLDA.
The progress may seem slow and frustrating but remember
nothing comes easy and we have to be prepared to win
both the battle and the war.
